On the 7th of June, faith activists held one of their every other week prayer vigils in front of Orlando’s City Hall. This week, it was Orlando Muslims that bottomlined the vigil but many faiths were represented.
Several of the participants had been at the previous day’s vigil in front of Alligator Auschwitz, which is closing but at the moment is nastier than ever. Several of the speeches were about this concentration camp.
One activist spoke on the urgent warning that has gotten out of the camp that detainees who won’t sign “voluntary” departure papers are being denied WATER.
If anyone wonders why Orlando’s City Hall is a venue for this, both the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE. Some officials (notably in Key West) were threatened with removal last year for failing to sign these collaborationist deals and folded under pressure. Their obligations however were to either force DeathSantis to remove them or resign themselves. Collaboration with ICE is the same as collaboration with Hitler and no excuses can be accepted, ever.
Orlando and Orange County need to revoke their 287(g) agreements, and let the chips fall where they may. If it is illegal to have a jail without a 287(g) deal to let ICE fish in it, closing the jail entirely is the legal way out of this one. The Orlando PD and Orange County Sheriff’s Office can go too as far as I am concerned.
