NASA Scientists And Engineers Defend Science, Decry Steep Budget Cuts to Agency

(From DC Media Group, note that this affects hurricane monitoring by sattelite. The money is to be spent on ICE instead in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill)

Washington, DC—Something almost as strange as the discovery of dark matter itself happened outside the NASA headquarters building in Washington, DC on Monday morning. NASA scientists, engineers, technicians, and supporters protested ongoing government cutbacks outside their headquarters office in Washington, DC. They wanted to make the public aware of the impact that ongoing budget cuts and the spending bill would have on the U.S. space agency.

Indigenous youth, migrant rights activists protest Trump’s grand opening of Alligator Alcatraz

On the 1st of July, would-be King Trump held a “grand opening” for his “Alligator Alcatraz” concentration camp in the Everglades. With him were Ron DeSantis and Kristi Naom. A Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle was parked inside the gate and much of the Collier County FL Sheriff’s Dept was at the site.

Facing the cops and a handful of Proud Boys and MAGA meatheads were well over 100 protesters organized by Miccosukee youth backed up by migrant rights activists and anti-fascist activists. It is the Miccosukee whose sacred land is being stolen, desecrated, and trashed for this project.

A chant in the protest warned “People will die here!” Prisons in Florida generally do not offer A/C in the cellblocks, so its unlikely that this tent city internment camp will have A/C outside of the trailers used by the guards. Note that the Everglades are one of the hottest and most humid places in all of Florida, and most of the hostages Trump and DeSantis plan to hold in tents there there will be from other climates.

The protest was tense. While protester managed to stay out of the road, the media did not. This factor combined with widespread police support for Trump and ICE plus Proud Boys trying and failing to start fights left the cops quite agitated. Tribal organizers emphasized the importance of not biting on bait set by right-wing disruptors given the dangerous environment. Nobody did, even while Proud Boys dressed to resemble ICE agents paraded in the street past the crowd and were NOT ordered out of the street by police.

A number of protesters carried signs calling this hellhole not “Alligator Alcatraz” but “Alligator Auschwitz.” The name is apt: remember that Hitler’s concentration camps began in exactly this way: as temporary holding facilities for Hitler’s poltical enemies. They grew from such facilities to massive slave labor and death camps responsible for at least six million deaths and untold misery.

Today, we have Trump’s “homegrowns are next” remarks indicating potential future uses for facilities such as this one. Note that Trump has already threatened NYC Dem Mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani with deportation if he dares to block ICE’s activities in New York City. He is calling Trump’s bluff, saying he won’t stand for such intimidation tactics.

Video: Marching in St Pete Pride with People’s Pride Coalition

On June 28, 2025, the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, St Petersburg FL’s Pride parade took to the streets.

The People’s Pride Coalition was one of a number of contingents taking issue with corporatization of Pride, cops in Pride (one chant was “Fuck the Police!”), and the whole idea that Pride should not be a protest.

Video is shot from inside the Pride parade, marching with the People’s Pride Coalition contingent.

Video: the trans march at St Petersburg FL Pride

This is the trans march that feeds into St Pete Pride. This year St Pete Pride was June 28, the exact 56th anniversary of Stonewall.

Concerning Pride and Stonewall: note that cops were at Stonewall too but not in a role most Pridegoers would consider friendly. Stonewall was literally a trans riot, and the cops were the attackers that night. The attack was defeated and the rest is history…

Protesters outside Sarasota-Bradenton Airport hammer Avelo’s deportation flights, Alligator Alcatraz

On the 26th of June, protesters showed up across the street as close as they could get to Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (SRQ). This was one of a series of protests targetting Avelo Airline’s role as a major provider of deportation flights for ICE. Avelo is going to have to choose between the heartless monsters at ICE and their civilian customer base.

In addition to excoriating Avelo Airlines’s ICE flights, they also targetted “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades. This is FL Governor DeathSantis’s under construction and rapidly growing tent city on a disused airstrip. Announced just days ago, this is to be an ICE detention center with a capacity of 4,000 hostages.

Alligator Alcatraz is drawing intense opposition, DeathSantis is trying to create facts on the ground faster than the forces of justice can mobilize to stop his sorry ass.

The entire facility will only be accessable by one road with no turnoffs for dozens of miles: the Tamiami Trail section of US 41. It will be difficult or impossible to evacuate when this fall’s hurricanes come roaring in, and the heat and humidity could prove deadly before then.

Due to this camp’s potential as a death camp, I have sometimes called it not Alligator Alcatraz, but Alligator Auschwitz. Trump and DeSantis are Nazis, and death camps are exactly what Nazis build.

Protesters gather against Florida AG’s proposed “Alligator Alcatraz” ICE detention center

Florida’s racist, migrant-hating attorney general James Uthmeier is proposing to build an ICE detention center on a remote and mostly disused airstrip in the Everglades. This is the Dade-Collier Training Airport, of which only runway was ever built. The project has been dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” and would be built directly on the runway.

This project poaches on Miccosukee land and would be damaging to the Everglades as a whole. This is on top of the horrific abuse and even torture of detainees by ICE and their detention contractors.

With this in mind, protesters including the American Indian Movement (AIM), migrant rights activists, and environmentalists gathered off Tamiami Trail (US 41) in the Everglades, presumably as close to the proposed site as they could get.

Protesters in Tampa march from county courthouse to Federal courthouse against Trump’s war on Iran

On the 22nd of June, protesters gathered at the Hillsborough County Courthouse before marching to the Federal courthouse against Trump’s bombing campaign.

Protesters emphasized that Trump and the US are the #1 globally threatening nation state. This bombing has nothing to do with Iran’s nuclear energy projects, nor with the nature of its government. Remember: Trump is transforming the US into a nuclear armed hybrid between theocracy and Fascism.

More likely Trump is deliberately entering a foreign war as a “Weapon of Mass Distraction” hoping to divert the public from opposing his agenda of hate and the growth of his dictatorial powers.

Orlando antiwar activists march against Trump’s proposed war with Iran

This is another of the June 18 protests against Trump’s sudden interest in direct US involvement in the Israeli-Iran war. Marchers in Orlando took the message to rush hour traffic on E Colonial Drive. The march was on the sidewalks except to cross, allowing the full flow of rush hour traffic to see the protest. Many passersby honked with support, there were only a handful of MAGA jerks giving the finger etc.

It is interesting that Trump would start pushing this so quickly after his flop of a military parade was counterprotested by more than 3% of the US population turning out for No Kings protests. Starting or entering a war abroad is an old dictator’s gambit for escaping civil war at home. Always watch for this when a dictator gets into trouble.
